Question 1

Are louvred pergolas waterproof?

Accepted Answer

Yes — when the louvres are closed, an Aura louvred pergola is fully waterproof, with integrated guttering that channels rainwater down the posts.

Louvres are aluminium and pivot on a motor: open them for ventilation and shade, close them for full weather protection.

Question 2

What sizes do pergolas come in?

Accepted Answer

Freestanding pergolas can be specified from around 3m × 3m up to roughly 7m × 4m as a single bay. Larger installations use multiple bays coupled together — there's no practical maximum for commercial spaces.

Sizing depends on wind loading, snow loading and post positions. We'll spec the right structure at survey.

Question 3

Can I add heating, lighting and screens?

Accepted Answer

Yes — Aura pergolas are designed to take:

- **LED perimeter lighting** on dimmable channels.
- **Infrared heaters** integrated into the beam.
- **Zip-track side screens** in mesh or clear PVC for wind and privacy.

All controlled from the same Somfy remote or app.

Question 4

Do pergolas need planning permission?

Accepted Answer

For most domestic gardens, a pergola falls under permitted development if it's not attached to the house, is under 3m high and doesn't cover more than half the garden.

Listed buildings, conservation areas and commercial installations often need planning consent. See our [planning permission FAQs](/faqs/planning-permission).

Question 5

How long does a pergola installation take?

Accepted Answer

A single-bay freestanding pergola typically takes 1–2 days on site. Larger multi-bay commercial installations can run to a week including groundworks.

The base needs to be level and structural — usually a concrete pad or paved area with suitable substrate.
