Question 1

What is a traditional shop awning?

Accepted Answer

A traditional shop awning is a **drop-arm** or **Victorian-style** awning with a fixed frame and a canopy that pivots down at an angle over the shopfront. It's the classic look of British high-street shops and cafés.

Unlike a folding-arm awning, the frame stays visible when the awning is retracted — it's about heritage aesthetics as well as shade.

Question 2

Can you recover an existing traditional awning?

Accepted Answer

Yes — if the frame is structurally sound we can recover it in new fabric, including printed branding on the valance and canopy.

Fabric recovers cost significantly less than a new frame and give a tired shopfront a full refresh. See a [recent recover in Hackney](/latest-projects).

Question 3

How long do traditional shop awnings last?

Accepted Answer

A well-made traditional awning frame lasts 20+ years. The fabric typically needs recovering every 8–12 years depending on exposure, pollution and cleaning.

Question 4

Can traditional shop awnings be motorised?

Accepted Answer

Yes — many traditional units are retrofitted with a Somfy tubular motor and remote, though a lot of shops keep them manual because they're only operated once a day.

We can advise at survey whether motorising is worth the additional cost for your unit.

Question 5

What fabrics suit traditional shop awnings?

Accepted Answer

We use the **Dickson Orchestra** range — a solution dyed acrylic that holds crisp stripe patterns and printed branding, and stands up to UK weather.

Stripes, blocks and heritage colours all work well. Full [fabric guide here](/our-fabrics).
